Little things that’ll make you feel less sad

  1. Quit that job that makes you miserable. Coming from a person who has done it before – yes, it really is that simple. You can only go up from there.
  2. Push yourself to wake up early. I know it seems like the hardest thing to get out of bed if you’re suffering from anxiety, but the faster you do it the more time you’ll have on your hands – more time to do things that make you happy.
  3. When it gets warm outside, buy yourself a cute little picnic blanket and go watch the sunrise/sunset by the sea.
  4. Strip the sheets off your bed and throw them into the washing machine. Put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. Make your bed in full.
  5. Have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. Brush your teeth, scrub your body, wash your hair. Spritz rosewater on your face and rub peach scented body butter all over your body.
  6. Open the windows and let some fresh air in.
  7. Put on clean and comfortable clothes.
  8. Cook yourself a beautiful breakfast. Sauté a handful of basil and a couple of baby tomatoes, beat together 3 eggs and pour the mixture over them, sprinkle with parmesan and season with salt and pepper.
  9. Buy a 1 litre water bottle and push yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.
  10. Practise yoga. It’s a good way to relax your mind and your muscles.
  11. Meditate.
  12. Buy a journal. Carry it with you everywhere you go. Write about your favorite moments, your least favorite moments, ideas, grocery lists, people you’ve met, strangers you’ve walked past on the street, favorite quotes, the colours of the sunrise/sunset, song lyrics, places you want to go or places you’ve been, your favourite recipes, draw out the dog you saw in the park, scribble little stars all over the pages. And when that one gets full, buy a new one.
  13. Smile at strangers.
  14. Think about what interests you. French recipes? Sex? Poetry? Photography? Find a book about it and read it. There is a book about literally everything.
  15. Water your plants if you haven’t done that in a while.
  16. Cuddle your pets.
  17. Make something. Write a poem, draw a picture, fold an origami, sculpt something out of clay, anything artistic. Even if you think you suck at it.
  18. Challenge yourself to not talk down on anyone for a whole day. Then two. Then a week.
  19. Drink a cup of hot chamomile tea before bed. It’s like a warm hug on the inside.
  20. Don’t stay up until 2 a.m.
